There are a number of different towns and cities in the Algarve that are well worth a visit. The architecture, markets, harbours, restaurants and even street art are all good reasons to take a day out from the beaches and pop into one or two of the regions towns or cities.

A few of our favourites are:

SAGRES. The most westerly town in Europe has a number of spectacular beaches, great surf, a gorgeous working, fishing harbour and a some of the most alternative restaurants in the area. Here you will also find a good selection of surf shops also offering equipment rentals. The old fort out on the cliffs is also worth a look and the light house at Cape St Vincent is a must for sunset views.

LAGOS. A lot of the local tourism is centred around Lagos so there are gift shops aplenty. However if you look a little further you will see a thriving international street art scene that host exhibitions and workshops. The old town offers  lovely meandering streets with typical Portugese tiles and is dotted with hidden bars and restaurants. Lagos is also home to the best fish market of the area. Some of the street performers are also a good source of entertainment!

MONCHIQUE. At about 800 metres above sea level this little town offers awesome views on a clear day and some sweet little local restaurants that are perfect for lunch and lots of different local handy craft shops.

SILVES. For a mediaeval experience this town is a good shout. A huge and dramatic castle overlooks the old town and river. Admission is about €2. Also a number of traditional restaurants and bars in the town make it a nice day trip. Famous for it's orange groves, it's worth picking up a bag of some of the juiciest oranges from the road side sellers.
